[ARCHIVED] For Immediate Release: Ellis County Commissioners Court Appoints New Sheriff

April 21, 2017 Waxahachie, Texas – The Ellis County Commissioners Court has appointed Charles “Chuck” Edge as the new Ellis County Sheriff.  Mr. Edge was chosen from a pool of 16 candidates.

“The Commissioners Court is appreciative of the many qualified candidates that stepped forward to be considered for this critical position,” said Judge Carol Bush. “It was a difficult decision, but we believe that Mr. Edge is the person with the vision to lead the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office in a positive direction.”

Chief Edge is most familiar to Ellis County citizens as the Chief of Police for the City of Waxahachie. He served in that capacity from 2007 – 2014, and was in charge of the department’s budget, 59 police officers and support staff. One of his many accomplishments in Waxahachie include being recognized by the Texas Police Chiefs Foundation for best practices and procedures.

Chief Edge also served in the United States Army from 1986 – 1981 as a  Flight Engineer/Aircraft Maintenance Manager. He logged more than 500 flight hours including 100 combat hours in Desert Shield/Storm on a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter. Upon leaving the military, Chief Edge joined the ranks of law enforcement and served in managerial capacities from 1982 until he retired as Waxahachie Chief of Police in 2014.

The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office also includes the Ellis County Jail. The annual budget for the Sheriff's Office is $9,017,169 and the Jail is $10,470,850, for a total combined budget of $19,488,019. The Sheriff's Office employs 108 people, while the Jail has 126 employees, for a total staff of 234 people.

“The safety and welfare of our citizens is the most important priority for all County employees, but especially for those who serve in the Sheriff’s Office,” Judge Bush noted. “Because of the critical function of the Sheriff position, the Commissioners Court invested a considerable amount of time in evaluating and interviewing the candidates. We are pleased with our selection of Chuck Edge and look forward to a strong and supportive working relationship.”

The former Ellis County Sheriff was Johnny Brown, who resigned on March 8, 2017. Brown won re-election in 2016.

Mr. Edge will take the oath of office in the Commissioners Courtroom on the second floor of the historic Courthouse. The date and time will be announced.
